Connecticut Common Standard for Assessing "School-Age" Credits and Degrees (including Elementary Education, Recreation, Group Social Work or Related Field for School-Age Head Teachers)

This document includes guidance on assessing courses and degrees in elementary education, recreation, and group social work degree programs that could meet the education requirement for the school-age head teacher certificate.

The document "Connecticut Common Standard for Assessing Early Childhood Education Credits and Degrees" guides assessing credits in early childhood education or child development. This may be referenced to assess possible early childhood or child development credits also applicable to school- age head teacher applicants.

The Office of Early Childhood Statutes and Regulations for Licensing Child Care Centers and Group Day Care Homes section 19a-79-11(f)(School age children endorsement) defines the education requirement for a school-age head teacher as follows:

(5) (A) "Twelve (12) credits in early childhood education or child development, elementary
education, recreation, group social work or a related field from an accredited institution of
higher education with program approval from the Board of Governors of Higher Education; or"

(B) "approval by the department as a head teacher prior to January 1, 1994; or"

(6) "a four (4) year college degree in elementary education, recreation, group social work or
a related field from an accredited institution of higher education with program approval
from the Board of Governors of Higher Education"

Definition of Common Standard: School-Age

The Office of Early Childhood has adopted the following standard to be used to determine compliance with the requirement of 12 credits in elementary education, recreation, group social work or a related field early childhood education:

Courses, that includes the study of the education or development of children five to twelve years of age and the core knowledge associated with school-age education, will be credited toward the requirement of twelve credits in elementary education, recreation, group social work or a related field early childhood education.
